Project based learning...

Children are capable of constructing their own learning and are driven by their interests to understand and know more.

It is our role as practitioners to watch and listen carefully to children and help guide and develop their learning. This often means that from the starting point, a ‘project’ develops.

To commemorate Australia day back in January, the children in Busy Bees explored various native Australian treasures including maps, globes, art, and didgeridoos. The children paid particular attention to the heavily patterned didgeridoo – investigating the colours, sound and texture.

Their curiosity spiralled when we played the didgeridoo!

Inspired by the sound, the children were eager to try and create the loud, deep sounds themselves. They took turns blowing into the instrument before passing it back to us to play the loud sounds again.

This then led us to create our own didgeridoos using large tubes and to decorate them using the authentic Aboriginal ‘dot’ technique that the children had become so intrigued by. We used pencils, cotton buds and our fingers to create brightly coloured didgeridoos to display within the room.

Projects are ongoing and last anywhere from a few days to a few months and throughout this time the theme is often reflected in all areas of a child’s learning.
